FINNISH WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP 2002 / COST 273

The FWCW'02/COST 273 meetings takes place at Helsinki University of Technology, Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering (HUT/ECE) located at the Otaniemi campus area in Espoo. Street address of the main entrance is Otakaari 5A. The registration desk and the main meeting room S4 (COST) and S1 (FWCW'02) are close to the main entrance (see the attached map).

Registration for tutorials only (arranged in hall S3), is available on Tuesday 28 May before the morning (10.00-13.00) and afternoon (14.00-17.00) tutorials in hall S3.

The dinner is at Restaurant NJK at the main harbour of Helsinki about 1 km south from the market square (Kauppatori) on island of Valkosaari.

For participants staying at Radisson SAS Espoo there is a bus transfer to dinner.

From the hotel at 18:40. Return transfer at 21.30.

Participants staying at other hotels are requested to arrive on the restaurant NJK pier at 19.00. The boat to Dinner restaurant will depart next to Olympiaterminal building.

To get to Otaniemi, we recommend to take a taxi. The trip takes 20 - 45 minutes depending on the traffic and costs 30-35 Euros. Show the street address of the venue or the hotel to the driver and you should get to the main entrance of the HUT/ECE or at your hotel.

To get to the hotels (Ramada or Scandic) at the center of Helsinki, there is a bus connection from the airport to the railway station with about 10 minute walk to the hotels.

Otaniemi can be reached by buses departing from the main bus station in Helsinki. Ramada and Scandic are next to the bus station. Buses number 102 and 103, platform 51 or buses number 194 and 195, platform 50 take you to Otaniemi. The platforms are located close to Scandic on the southern side of the square. Note that only bus number 102 has its final stop in Otaniemi, all others will continue further. For Helsinki-Otaniemi/Espoo, you need a regional ticket. This ticket should be used in the metropolitan area (Helsinki-Espoo-Vantaa). It costs 3 EUR and it is valid for one hour allowing unlimited number of changes between different vehicles. Within the Helsinki City limits a similar ticket costs 2 EUR. These tickets can be purchased from the driver. A discount price regional ticket for ten trips can be purchased at the main bus station and R-Kiosks for 22 EUR.

The recommended bus is 102 as it takes the southern route either all the way via the Motorway or partly through smaller streets on the island Lauttasaari (this option is marked with T in the timetable, which you find at the platform or from http://www.ytv.fi/aikataulut/seutu/s102.html). The end of the route is equal for both of them and the difference in driving time is less than 10 minutes. The bus leaves the motorway towards right and after a few minutes turns left to Otaniemi campus area. The first stop after the turn is the closest one for Radisson SAS Hotel. To get to the hotel, leave the bus stop "backwards" and turn left after about 50 m to Otaranta street. Walk along this street about 500 m to the hotel.

To get to HUT/ECE, stay on the bus and you get to the central campus area. The next stop is by the HUT main library (24, right) and after a right turn to Otakaari there is a stop in front of the main building with the high "triangular" auditoriums on the right (1). The next stop after the main building is in front of the HUT/ECE (6) main entrance and you should get off the bus. In case you miss this stop the next one is the end of the line and you just have to walk about 500 m back along Otakaari.

A taxi from the Helsinki City centre to Otaniemi costs approximately 17 EUR.

Leave the main entrance of the hotel towards left and walk up the hill along Luolamiehentie towards the Dipoli Congress Center (a "rocky" building with several hundred corners). Round the Dipoli building from the right side and take the underpass below Otakaari. Keep right and walk along the small pedestrian/cycling road. On your right you soon have the Construction and Technical Physics Engineering buildings (4 and 5) and after those you see on the right the main entrance of HUT/ECE building (no. 6). The main entrance is at the western end of the building (see the picture below).

There is a Nordea bank office in the mall of Otaniemi (25). Opening hours are from 9.15 to 16.15 on weekdays.

Use the automats called "OTTO" for bank or credit cards (VISA, Eurocard, Mastercard) withdrawals.

There are two groceries located in the mall of Otaniemi, opposite the Dipoli Congress Centre. The prices are slightly higher and the variety of items is more restricted than in the bigger groceries and department stores in Tapiola, Espoo or the Helsinki Centre. The shops are open from 9.00 to 21.00 on weekdays, from 9.00 to 18.00 on Saturdays and from 9.00 to 16.00 on Sundays.

The pharmacy in Otaniemi is located in the mall next to the groceries. It is open between 9.00-17.00 on weekdays. Medicine against headache and other minor illnesses can be bought directly. For prescription medicines contact a local doctor.
