S-72.173 Special Project in Communications Engineering (3 cr)

General

The purpose of the special project is that the student focuses on a well-defined research problem, solves it, and writes a project report. The project report can be considered to be a Master's Thesis in miniature scale. Thus, formal requirements applying to Master's Thesis apply also to the special project report. Perhaps the most important objective of the special project is to get practice for writing Master's Thesis. The project report must be submitted before Master's Thesis subject may be applied. The length of the project report should be targeted at 20-25 pages. The special project will be graded. The report can be written in Finnish or English.

Supervisor

Prof. Halme, Prof. Häggman, Prof. Korhonen or Prof.Patric Östergård. In addition to a supervisor, the student may also have a special project instructor, particularly if the project is done in the Communications Laboratory.

Prerequisites

Most of the courses in the major subject should be completed before the special project.

How to choose a subject for the special project?

Communications Laboratory usually gives the subject. Check the available subjects page. It is also possible to suggest your own topic, related to your upcoming Master's Thesis, for example. In this case you must define the research task well and your supervising professor has to accept it.

How to get started?

1) Find a special project subject. Check the subjects currently available from ComLab. You can also ask available subjects from laboratory personnel directly.

2) Contact your supervising professor, or the person in the laboratory responsible for the special project subject. If you are suggesting your own subject, write a short (<1 page) outline of the subject, and email it to your supervising professor. The outline should give a clear idea of what is the research problem, what methods will be used to solve it, and structure of the special project report, etc.

3) Get the booklet "How to write a Diploma Thesis?". Since the special project is a miniature of Master's Thesis, most instructions and hints given in the booklet apply also to the special project. You can get it from instructor, supervising professor, or from study office.
