Measurement and Modelling of Traffic in ATM, IN and Mobile Networks

Goal

Correct dimensioning of communication networks is based on traffic theory. In order to apply the theory it is necessary to have a good grasp of the following traffic issue in the network:

- Quality of Service/ Grade of Service parameters (QoS7GOS)

- effect of traffic controls on the character of the traffic

- measurement of traffic

These issues are different in ATM, IN and mobile networks. By treating these three network types based on recent measurements and modelling by the lecturers and by reviewing relevant literature the course gives some insight to what kind of traffic will be in a future network where the services are mobile, broadband nad intelligent.

Passing the course:

The course consists of 24 hours of lectures or seminars. Their portion is assumed to be about even. About 10 hours of lectures are given by the lecturers, while the course participants are each invited to give one 35 min presentation on course related subject, based on selected literature or on participant's own results. 10 min should be left for discussion. The participants should provide copies of the presentation material to other participants.

The course is followed by an examination and has also exercises. The exercises consist of e.g. analysing traffic traces by small programs, calculations or simulations.

Passing the course (5 units) requires:

Active participation (14 out of 20 hours)

Giving a 35 min presentation and answering questions

Passing the examination at the end of the course based on agreed material

Performing the exercises (60 %)

The course can also be passed as (1 unit) seminar course with the following demands:

Active participation (14 out of 20 hours)

Giving a 35 min presentation and answering questions

The course can be included in LTKK (Lappeenranta University of Technology) doctorate studies as 1990 Tietoliikennetekniikan jatko-opintokurssi (1 or 5 units as above).

Lecturers:

Professor Jorma Jormakka (LTKK)

Dr. Terje Jensen (Telenor)
