Services and Systems

During this fall, the course will follow the schedule below: 

  • Lectures on every Thursday during 12:00--14:00 in hall S3 and on Fridays 10-12 S3. First lecture: 28.10.2004.
  • Exercises on Fridays 12-14 S3. 
  • Download home exercises 2004.

Return your answers no later than on Wednesday 17.12.2004 at 16:00 into the course's P.O. box at the second floor of the E-wing.

Course status

The course is lectured every academic year in the second half or the autumn term. It is intended for third year students. The course is a compulsory course in the option Networks and Systems and optional in the option Product Design and User Interfaces in Communications. It is compulsory in the major/minor subject Televiestintäjärjestelmät (Radio Communications Path) and Communications Engineering and can be included as optional course in the major/minor subjects Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing, Radio Engineering, Signal Processing, and Teletraffic Theory. It is also included as compulsory in the curriculum of the International Master’s Program in Telecommunications.

The courses S-72.610 and S-72.620 together replace the earlier course S-72.231 Mobile Communication Systems. If either of the two first courses are included in the Master's degree program, the last one cannot be included. If the course S-72.231 is included in the Master's degree program, neither of the two first courses can be included.

Course targets
The course gives basic knowledge about mobile communication systems and services, so that future cellular radio network planners, operators and equipment designers know about the possibilities and limitations of mobile traffic and services, know the terminology, and the implementation methods of the systems. In addition, he/she knows the characteristics of presently used mobile communication systems, and knows about new system under development. 

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites, but the course S-72.245 Transmission Methods in Telecommunication Systems would be helpful.

Lectures and exercises
Lectures are held on Thursdays 12 – 14 and on Fridays 10-12 in Auditorium S3. The lectures start on 28.10.2004. Exercises are scheduled to Fridays 12 -14 in Auditorium S3.  However, part if these times can be used for lectures. By making voluntary home tasks, which will be checked and graded, you may got bonus to the final course grade.

Requirements 
The course is carried out with an exam and optional home assignments. The exam requirements consist of the material distributed to the students. The exam is a closed-book exam with one compulsory task and four other task out of six given tasks. The tasks will be available in English and Finnish. The first exam is on December 17, 2004. Information about the following exams will be shown on the Departments web-pages. Calculators are allowed and their use is highly recommendable. Otherwise the general exam rules in HUT are followed.

Final grade


Final grade is the nearest integer to the exam grade + 0.2 * assignment grade.
