S-72.3340 OPTICAL NETWORKS (3 cr)

Course Description

Course Targets

The research and development of optical communication networks has made significant strides over the past decade. Most of theideas and design principles initially tested in a laboratory environment have seen increased commercialization in areas where the demand for data carrying capacity is very high (multi-gigabit per second). Optical network implementations are now to be found in undersea networks as well as international/national backbone networks and metropolitan networks. The main essence of this course is its timelines in the coverage of current and emerging optical networking topics. Upon completion of the course, a student is expected to be sufficiently knowledgeable in the main principles of optical networking so as to undertake research in the area or cope with the initial demands of an industry job.
