This thesis is about designing and implementing an alarm management framework for a wide-area paging system. The reasons for this work have been the need to provide industry-standard alarm management functions to paging operator personnel and to provide standardised management interfaces from paging system to operator's existing higher-level management systems.

The alarm management model presented in this thesis is designed according to the principles of TMN standards. Therefore the implementation can be seen as a gateway between legacy elements and telecommunications management network. The model provides basis for the implementation of management functions defined by TMN as well as alarm interfaces to third party network management stations.

A collection of GUI-based alarm management applications is implemented in order to provide as simple interface as possible for the operating personnel.

The implementation of alarm interfaces presented in this thesis consists of a wide variety of different techniques, including SNMP, CORBA and more conventional ASCII methods. SNMP and ASCII-based interfaces can be used to transport alarm information to external 3"' party management stations. CORBA-based interface written in Java allows the operator to use a geographically distributed management stations with a minimum hardware costs.
