S-72.423 Telecommunication Systems (3 cr)

Modern day telecommunications is established by using dedicated telecommunication networks. Probably the most familiar of them are the ordinary telephone network (Public Switched Telephone Network), the GSM (Global System for Mobile) and of course the Internet that is based on TCP/IP protocol suite. The 3rd generation UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) that is based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is an interesting topic of 2002 increasing mobile data rates orders of magnitude up to 2 Mbit/s enabling thus potentially true interactive mobile multimedia applications. Also the development of 4th generation networks is getting more and more attention and there are good possibilities that it will be launched in some countries even before the 3rd gen. due to its more flexible financial-structure and greater service adaptivity.

Objective of this course is to inspect and summarize the major features of the today's most popular telecommunication networks as well as the forthcoming ones, and to get oneself familiar to the related standardization work established by ITU (International Telecommunications Union), ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and various other worldwide standardization bodies. The focus of this course is in the understanding of the network interface dynamics (connecting network elements) and in the concise inspection of the inherent network topology and network node functionalities. Notes about practicalities of Lecture diaries:

 Please find attached below some practical guides for your work with Lecture Diaries that we have found you should follow:

1) Firstly, course assistant will email each students 12 links, they should grade the diaries in
sequence once a week (Grading deadline is the next Thursday from the lecture, so, within one week). This must be done in the order defined in this email.

2) Deadline for submitting your own lecture diary is the next Tuesday (5 days) from the lectures. Deadline for the grading is the next Thursday from the lectures (7 days).

3) Email  the lecture assistant if you can not grade, with the info of the links to the diaries you were supposed to grade.

4) Strictly follow the diary guide.

5) Grading and submitting 12 diaries gives you more points that just the required number of 8 because total Lecture diary points (max 5 p) are weighted by average_of_your_lecture_diary_grades*number_of_submitted_lecture_diaries/12

6) When a student makes his/her diary, he/she should place own name under the title.

7) For those students who use the password, be sure your passwords works.

8) Each student should make sure their webpage works and that it can be accessed also outside of HUT
