06.03.2006 Discuss & ask about course in EeForum!

17.03.2006 Due to overlapping with other courses the course program has slightly changed. See new dates and times on the Program page.

22.03.2006 There was still some overlapping with S-72.3280. From now on Tuesday’s lectures are held 8.15 -10.00.

29.03.2006 Exercise 1 has been published. Remember to return your solution before the first tutorial on 6.4.

2.4.2006 Hints for the Exercise 1 have been published. The exercise is hard, thus getting good points does not necessarily require having the right answer.

6.4.2006 Exercise 1 solution (ppt / pdf) has been published. If you think you have found an error, please write about it to EeForum or to mika.husso@tkk.fi.

I’ll discuss the “errors” with Michael and publish a corrected version of the solution if necessary.

7.4.2006 Exercise 2 (+ hints) has been published. Remember to return your solution at latest to the tutorial on 27.4.

11.4.2006 Exercise 1 points (pdf) have been published. If you returned your solution, but haven’t got points, e-mail mika.husso@tkk.fi. In the Exercise 2 getting good points will not be as easy.

26.4.2006 Exercise 3 has been published. Maximum points will be 40. Remember to return your solution at latest to the tutorial on Thursday 4.5.

27.4.2006 Exercise 2 points (pdf) have been published.

27.4.2006 Exercise 2 solution (ppt / pdf) has been published. I added some explanation of the man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) as well.

2.5.2006 Some additional material for the exam will be distributed to you through Edita during the next couple of days. Check your hand-out delivery box!

2.5.2006 Note that the tutorial and the lecture on 4.5 have changed places. Lecture on 4.5.2006 will be held 8.30 – 10.00 and the tutorial 10.15 – 11.45.

4.5.2006 Exercise 3 solution (ppt / pdf) has been published. This time it will last a bit longer for points to be published. Some information on what to study for the exam should appear on the website soon.

5.5.2006 Tips for the exam (ppt / pdf) are now on the website!

17.5.2006 Exercise 3 points and final exercise grades (pdf) have been published. These grades multiplied by 0.2 will be added to your exam grade. Check your points and contact me if feel you haven’t got the points you deserved. Final course grades will probably be ready next week and they will appear here.

22.5.2006 Final course grades (pdf) have been published. 1 Bonus point for giving feedback will be added later and it may still improve your grade. If you wish to review grading, contact michael.hall@tkk.fi.

Course status

This is a new course. It is not a prerequisite for any other course.

Course targets

The course provides basic knowledge on wireless network technology related to wireless personal area networks (WPAN), wireless local area networks (WLAN) and wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN).

The course concentrates on physical layer and medium access control (MAC) layer operation of wireless systems covered by the IEEE 802 series standards, such as Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15.1 WPAN), ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN), WiFi (IEEE 802.11 WLAN) and WiMAX (IEEE 802.16 WMAN). A large part of the course is devoted to security aspects, such as public key cryptography. Other topics covered are the implementation and performance of real-time services, and interworking with mobile cellular systems.

Prerequisites

The course S-72.1140 should be passed before taking the exam of this course.

Teachers

The course is lectured by Michael Hall, who is the responsible teacher of this course.

The exercises are held by Mika Husso, who is also the web-master.

Lectures and exercises (schedule)

This is a new course. Lectures start on Monday 13.3.2006. There is a link on this page to the lecture program.

  • Lectures are held on Mondays 10-12 and Tuesdays 08:30 - 10 in Room I 346.
(NOTE: Tuesday time changed due to overlapping lectures with S-72.3280)
  • Exercises are held on Thursdays 8-10 (not every week) in Room I 346.

Requirements

The course is carried out by an exam. The exam requirements consist of the lecture material distributed to the students. The first exam will be held 13-16 on 10.5.2006 in hall S4.

Exercises

Exercises are voluntary, but may improve your final grade. Exercise papers need to be returned to the exercise or at least an hour before the exercise to a box located under the course notice board on the 2nd floor. The return box is labelled “S-72.3240 Wireless Personal, Local, Metropolitan and Wide Area Networks.” Exercise tasks are published on the course website at least a week prior to the exercise.

The exercise grade will be given according to the following table.

Exercise grade

Percentage of maximum points (%)

0

Less than 15

1

15 – 24 %

2

25 - 39 %

3

40 - 54 %

4

55 - 69 %

5

At least 70 %

The percentage you get will be rounded up to the nearest integer. For example, if you get 39,2 %, it will be rounded to 40 % and your exercise grade will be 3.

Exercise results will be published on the course website and the notice board.

Final grade

The final course grade is the exam grade + 0,2 * exercise grade.
