Fall 2007

Outline

Telecommunication systems operate in transmission channels whose properties dictate a great deal of their design. For instance, communication by microwave links or by power-line communications set quite different requirements for modulation, channel coding and channel estimation. The objective of this course is to inspect the various physical level design philosophies and practical structures in telecommunication systems in order to enable reliable and efficient telecommunications.

Lecturer

Timo O. Korhonen, tel. 09 451 2351

Lecture assistants

For feedback and discussion access the Eeforum

Tutorials: Seppo Saastamoinen, tel. 09 451 5417, Naser Tarhuni, tel. 09 451 2362

Topics

Digital and analog baseband signals. Amplitude, phase and frequency modulation. Error performance of digital communications in AWGN channel. Bandpass carrier wave transmission. Channel coding. Application examples.

Tutorials

Tutorials will be arranged both in Finnish (4 tutorials /"laskarit" on Wednesdays at 12-14 in hall S4 on 3.10., 10.10., 17.10. and 24.10.) and in English (4 tutorials on Wednesdays at 14 -16 in hall S5 on 3.10., 10.10., 17.10. and 24.10.) having identical contents. Here you get detailed tutorial info.

Grading

Closed-book exam. By participating to tutorials you can upgrade your exam grade by maximum of 1.

Handouts

1) Course material is published in printed and downloadable handouts.
2) Study material for the course (90 pages) will be available by Edita. If you want study material directly to your folder, registry to webtopi before 15.9. See more details here: http://www1.edita.fi/prima/opetusmonisteet/opiskelijoille.html

The following books can be applied as lecture/tutorial references:

- B. Carlson: Communication Systems IV ed. (Telecommunications theory)

- J. G. Proakis, et al: Contemporary Communication Systems using Matlab, II ed. (Matlab exercises and theory)

- B. P. Lathi: Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems III ed. (basic theory, more text than in Carlson’s book!)

- Duck, Read: Data Communications and Computer Networks, II ed. (simple to follow)

Note: Also Wikipedia has turned out to be a quite good reference nowadays.
